Two Burke residents were honored with DAR America 250! awards at the April 8 meeting of the Quaker Meadows Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR).
Becca Heacock (Quaker Meadows Chapter, NSDAR daughter) and Kevin Allec (Colonel Alexander Caesar Chapter, Sons of the American Revolution member) were honored by the Chapter for their work on behalf of America 250! and honoring American independence.
Allec, who received a NSDAR medal and certificate, has led or participated in more than 30 SAR Patriot grave markings and assisted the Quaker Meadows Chapter in its DAR Patriot Marker Dedication at Greenlee Ford in May 2024, as well as its upcoming DAR/Pomeroy Patriot Marker Dedication at Obeth Cemetery, on Saturday, April 26, at 2 p.m.
At the McDowell House Museum, Allec provided the Historic Burke Foundation with a flintlock demonstration for fourth and fifth graders and assisted with several events, including Revolutionary War Days, George Washington’s Birthday, Summer First Saturdays, and Daniel Morgan Day at the Historic Burke County Courthouse. Allec is also a 1776 North Carolina Minuteman Company sponsor for the America 250 SAR Annual Congress that will be held in Greensboro next year.
Heacock serves the Chapter as America 250! chair and historian and has been instrumental in bringing the America 250! Celebration to the community through her ongoing work with the Historical Burke Foundation, the SAR, and the DAR, including assisting with three NSDAR America 250! Grant applications, the installation of two DAR markers, the 2024 Morganton Christmas Parade, and her work as a docent at the McDowell House. As a DAR member, Heacock was not eligible for the national award, and received a special chapter recognition and gift for her work.
Regent Pat Wells stated, “These two individuals have been instrumental in local efforts to celebrate the United States’ semiquincentennial and educate others regarding the event. We are so pleased to honor their work.”
The National Society, Daughters of the American Revolution, says of Allec’s award, “The DAR America 250! Commendation is for recognition of nonmember individuals and groups who have demonstrated extraordinary efforts to not only honor the men and women who achieved American Independence but also educate others about their service and sacrifice.”
The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) is a women’s service organization whose members can trace their lineage to an individual who contributed to securing American independence during the Revolutionary War.
Today’s DAR is dynamic and diverse, with more than 190,000 members in 3,000 chapters in the United States and abroad. DAR chapters participate in projects to promote historic preservation, education, and patriotism.
In 2024, DAR members provided more than 7 million hours of volunteer service to their local communities across the country and world.
The Quaker Meadows Chapter provided more than 4,000 hours. More than 1 million members have joined the organization since its founding in 1890.
