Carolina Caring Foundation receives $30K grant to help families in Burke County

Burke County families caring for children with serious illnesses will see added support through a $30,000 grant awarded to Carolina Caring Foundation for Cardinal Kids, the region’s pediatric palliative and hospice care program.

Carolina Caring Foundation announced it received the grant from Speedway Children’s Charities to help fund services provided through Cardinal Kids. The foundation said this is the third consecutive year Speedway Children’s Charities has selected Carolina Caring Foundation as a grant recipient.

Cardinal Kids provides pediatric palliative and hospice care for children with serious illness diagnoses and serves patients across a 12-county region that includes Burke County. Since 2019, the program has served hundreds of children, according to Carolina Caring.

The grant will support care that is not reimbursed by insurance, including services provided by nurses, social workers, and chaplains. Carolina Caring Foundation said philanthropic funding helps cover care coordination and family education so families can receive consistent support.

In 2025, Cardinal Kids became the first hospice in North Carolina to receive the Community Health Accreditation Partner Pediatric Care at Home certification, the organization said.
