Morganton High School Band

Shown here is the Morganton High School Band in the fall of 1937. This was the first band at Morganton High School, located on South College Street. The students are positioned in concert formation. They did not have uniforms at that time. The director was A. Moreland Cunningham, standing in the center behind the band. No school funds were available to support the band, so a community-wide campaign was held starting in October to raise $2,000 for uniforms, music, and instruments. Mayor Benedict Bristol issued a proclamation to support the campaign, designating October 10-16 as Band Week in Morganton. By the spring of 1937, band members, dressed in their new uniforms, won top honors in their division at the state music contest in Greensboro. Greene Studio created this image, provided by R. Douglas Walker, Jr., to Picture Burke, a digital photograph preservation project of the N.C. Room of the Burke County Public Library.
