The Burke County Board of Commissioners voted unanimously Monday to extend the deadline to Nov. 12 for nine Marshallese families living in a George Hildebrand church to complete critical repairs. Contractor Curt Abee will lead the $150,000 project, supported by verified funding and a community-led effort to preserve the group’s housing.
Extension granted following special called meeting on Monday morning.

Abee cited faith and community support as his motivation.
Pastor Tommy Liabwij praised Abee’s efforts and local goodwill.
County inspectors have cited the property for safety violations since 2021.
