Registration open for Color Our World Summer Reading Program
The First Baptist Church of Morganton originated in 1879. Its first church building on North Sterling Street was destroyed by fire. The second structure was built of brick on the corner of Meeting and South King streets in 1895. In 1917, an Estey pipe organ, pictured above, was installed with funds from the late philanthropist, Andrew Carnegie. This image shows a grouping of the First Baptist Church choirs: Church Choir, Chapel/Young People’s Choir, Ambassador Choir (boys aged 9-12), Carol Choir (girls aged 9-12) and Cherub Choir (ages 6-8). The Rev. John D. McCready served as the pastor when this image was made in May of 1952. Mrs. Beryl S. Wiltshire was the Minister of Music, and the organist was Mrs. Janette Walker. Registration for Color Our World, our Summer Reading Program, is now open. Check out our website and Facebook for our flyers and calendars. Programs requiring registration fill up quickly during the summer.
Storytime groups are on a break and will resume the week of June 9. Storytime groups do require pre-registration and are offered for all ages through 5th grade.
Looking for something to do this morning? At 10:30 a.m., the Valdese Public Library will host Morning Boxcar Cinema.
Children between 4 and 9 years old are invited to make their own “car” out of a box before pulling up to a screen to watch some short films. Popcorn, sweets, and a drink will be provided. Supplies are guaranteed for the first 20 children.
Join us in the Martha’s Park parking lot on Thursday, May 29, from 4-6 p.m. for a “wheely” good time. Children will be able to see some big trucks up close, meet the drivers, ask questions, and climb inside select vehicles to explore.
Registration is not required for this fun family event that is open to all ages.
The Morganton Public Library will host Little Sprouts: A Veggie Planting Party on Saturday, May 31. Drop in anytime between 10 a.m. and noon for a chance to plant some delicious veggies.
Kids will be able to plant a seed to take home, learn how to care for veggies with easy tips, create a fun craft, or enjoy a coloring sheet and take home some healthy, kid-friendly recipes featuring your veggies. Registration is not required.
Adult Programming
Oxymorons New Adult Book Discussion will be held Wednesday, May 28, at 6 p.m. at the Morganton Public Library. The book to be discussed will be “Cinder,” by Marissa Meyer. This book discussion is for older teens and adults only.

Young Adult Programming
This week is packed full of programs for middle and high school students.
Join us on Monday, May 19, at 6 p.m. at the C.B. Hildebrand Public Library for our monthly Anime Club, followed by Game Night on Tuesday, May 20, at 6 p.m. at the Valdese Public Library.
Thursday, May 22, at 4 p.m. will be a Canvas Art Afternoon at the Morganton Public Library. No pre-registration is required to attend any of these programs.
SRP Registration is now open at bcpls.readsquared.com. This year’s theme for Young Adult Services is “Make Some Noise @ your library” and is geared toward rising middle, middle, and high school students.

Libraries Closed
All locations of the Burke County Public Library will be closed on Monday, May 26, for Memorial Day.
Volunteer Opportunities
Volunteers are needed at the Morganton Public Library to assist with landscape maintenance. We need some folks to help us keep our landscaped areas free of weeds and debris.

Nearly 6,000 Burke County Public Library users have registered to use the library’s digital collection available through the e-iNC consortium and NC Kids Digital Library.
This digital collection includes eBooks, audiobooks, and streaming video available to Burke County Public Library cardholders. Apps are available for download for a variety of devices including Kindle, iPhone, and Android phones.
