Nearly two dozen artists left behind the comforts of their studios to paint outdoors during the annual Plein Air Fest in Valdese during the weekend of Sept. 19.
The fleeting qualities of a landscape are part of the beauty — and challenge — of painting in an ever-changing environment. Painters quickly work to capture the light and shadows that help define a moment in time. Many participants took their easels to Valdese Lakeside Park, while others chose to paint a view from a perch in the heart of downtown.
Word about the Plein Air Fest has apparently made its way into art circles in and outside the state. Among the 23 participants were 11 newcomers to the event and five who had never participated in a plein air event. The annual festival is sponsored by the Town of Valdese, Friends of Valdese Rec, and the Rock School Arts Foundation (RSAF).
