AMOREM will host the next monthly Good Grief Meal at three locations in January. The Burke County gathering will be 3 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 2, at Abele’s Family Restaurant, 2115 S. Sterling St. This informal time of food and fellowship is open to anyone who is experiencing grief and loss. The meal is a Dutch treat. Good Grief Meals will also be hosted at 3 p.m. on Jan. 7 at Mike’s Inland Seafood, 174 Jefferson Road in Boone, and 3 p.m. Jan. 8 at Mayflower Seafood, 303 Blowing Rock Blvd. in Lenoir.
The NAACP Burke County Unit #5367-B will hold its regular unit meeting on Thursday, Jan. 8, at 6 p.m. at the Mountain View Community Recreation Center, at 645 1st St. in Morganton. The meeting agenda will include discussions about the Christmas celebration as well as the Martin Luther King Jr. and annual Black History Festival celebrations that will occur in 2026. All members are encouraged to attend. Social distancing and healthy protocols will be practiced.
Burke County Smart Start’s board of directors’ meeting is scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 15, at 4 p.m. at the Partnership offices at 304 W. Union St. Board meetings are open to the public and are held in handicapped accessible facilities. COVID, flu, and other health restrictions will be observed. For anyone with a hearing impairment who may require the assistance of an interpreter or have other special needs, call the Partnership at 828-439-2326 or use the N.C. Relay System at 1-800-735-8262.
The Glen Alpine Fire Department is hosting a pancake breakfast fundraiser on Saturday, Jan. 24, from 7:30 a.m. to noon. Attendance helps the fire department continue to provide essential services to the Glen Alpine community and maintain the equipment the department relies on for emergencies. On the menu will be freshly made pancakes with syrup and butter, bacon, sausage, and hot coffee, juice, and milk. Local delivery is available for orders of 10 or more. The breakfast is $10 for adults and $5 for children younger than 12. Donations will also be accepted. Breakfast will be served at the fire department, adjacent to Glen Alpine Town Hall, at 103 Pitts St.
