Born in Tuscumbia, Ala., on June 27, 1880, Helen Keller lost her sight and hearing due to a severe illness when she was 19 months old. However, with the help of teacher Anne Sullivan, Keller learned to read, write, and speak, eventually becoming the first deafblind person in the United States to earn a bachelor’s degree.
