Recreation directors Lisa Butler of Drexel and Rose Cook of George Hildebrand recently organized and directed a Burke County senior basketball league for ages 15-18. Games in the four-team league were all played at Drexel’s R.O. Huffman Center, and teams each played eight regular-season games plus an end-of-season tournament which was hosted by George Hildebrand.
“We designed this league for kids that are aging out of Burke County Rec leagues and those that didn’t make (their high school team) or were not playing high school (ball),” Butler said. “We wanted to put something together to let them continue playing for the pure enjoyment.
“I would like to thank the parents, coaches, referees and Rose Cook for helping organize and make this league a huge success.”
The Drexel No. 1 team of Braylan Whisenant, Braylon Beam, Jusian Perkins, Zavion Allred, Micah Souder, Paegan Smith, Olivia Arch, and Chase Woodie was regular-season and tournament champions. The team was coached by Matt Whisnant.
The Drexel No. 2 team of Tobey Davis, Jaron Davis, Noah Harmon, Jacob Harmon, Spear Stephens, Payton Abee, Micheal Basinger, Jacob Grady, Nate Shuping, and Noah Lane was regular-season runner-up. The team was coached by Kelly Davis.
And the George Hildebrand team of Clayton Holcomb, Jacob Hamilton, Jacob Parker, Elliott Parker, Preston Springall, Cayson Smith, Walker Moneyham, Jonny Houston, and Brett Powell was tournament runner-up. The team was coached by Duane and Rose Cook.
