Burke County Board of Elections Director Kenny Rhyne said voter participation in the primary was slightly higher than typical for an election year without major local offices such as sheriff or clerk of court on the ballot. Tuesday’s turnout exceeded his projections by several percentage points, he said.
Wise said registered voters who have received an unvalidated identification information letter can still vote, but will be prompted to update their information.

Candidate filing opened Monday for the 2026 NC primary, with incumbents and challengers quickly entering Burke County races. Early filers include Warren Daniel, Hugh Blackwell, Randy Burns, Phil Smith, Crystal Carpenter, and Banks Hinceman. Filing runs through Dec. 19.
