Chief Sharpe is a skilled law enforcement officer who has brought much-needed change to the Valdese police department. At the same time, his tendency to dramatize his accomplishments and ignore input, "not invented here," is not serving the citizens of Valdese optimally. What is the point of continuing to lament the lack of a "Maiden-like" police station, even in the same council meeting at which the town council gave the go-ahead to construct the most extensive and costly public safety facility in the region? He urged the previous council to purchase a Main Street building that the department could "move right into." But then, when the council was considering a $1 million renovation to the building, he launched a 45-minute rebuttal to the proposal, comparing it to the Maiden facility. The "close your eyes and envision a horrible drama" was dishonest. The town hall that is serving as a temporary police headquarters for three or four years has a readily available room with a private exterior entrance. An almost perfect private interview room, except that the suggestion to use it came from a council member rather than being "invented" by the staff.
