The Community Foundation of Burke County, with assets totaling $54 million, has launched a search for a new president and CEO after the sudden departure of JJ Musgrove who was hired in October 2023.
“We have gone our separate ways,” said CFBC Chairman David Fletcher. “We are moving in a new direction.”
Musgrove’s last day was reportedly last week.
CFBC staff members Pashence Johnson-Sparks, finance director, and Aubrey Robbie, grants and scholarship manager, continue to manage gifts, endowments and bequests, and maintain client and donor communications, Fletcher said.
A letter is being prepared to donors for mailing this week, Fletcher said. In addition to stating that Musgrove has transitioned out of CFBC’s employ, it reportedly details steps the CFBC board is taking to ensure a smooth transition.
“We have a search committee that is looking for the next president and CEO,” Fletcher said. “We are continuing to operate business as usual.”
Fletcher said that the search committee is expected to recommend to the board in August whether to hire an interim CEO or launch an intensive search.
Residents closely associated with CFBC said that internal and external discontent with Musgrove leadership had been building. “It wasn’t a good fit,” one said, “probably for him or for us.”
Musgrove was hired to replace Nancy Taylor who resigned from the position after 10 years. Originally from Butler, Mo., he has a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre from Graceland University, a Master of Arts in Theater from the University of Central Missouri, and a Master of Science in Business with an emphasis on Organizational Leadership from Columbia State University.
Since 2000, CFBC has distributed more than $17 million in grants to nonprofit organizations and churches. In 2024, it issued $2,338,582 in total grants and scholarships, received $9.3 million in contributions and reported assets totaling $54.3 million. Musgrove’s salary was $128,400, according to IRS filings from 2024.
