Gov. Josh Stein announced this week the start of a $50 million state-funded grant program to help local governments recover from Hurricane Helene.
The Office of State Budget and Management will manage the Helene Local Government Capital Grants, which are designed to repair, renovate, or replace infrastructure damaged by the storm.
“Local governments are on the front lines of rebuilding communities and restoring services after Hurricane Helene, and I thank the General Assembly for investing in them,” Stein said. “These grants will help towns and counties across western North Carolina bolster critical infrastructure that keeps people safe.”
The program is open to municipalities, counties, and federally recognized tribes with capital needs caused by Hurricane Helene. Projects must be located in FEMA-designated disaster areas and must have been denied FEMA Public Assistance reimbursement.
Burke County is a FEMA-designated area.
Award amounts will follow statutory caps based on the size of the county and recipient.
State Budget Director Kristin Walker said her staff “looks forward to working with our partners in recovery at the local level.”
Applications are due Nov. 21, 2025. More information and application details are available through the state’s Helene Local Government Capital Grant Program.
