FOR THE PAPERUPDATE AS OF 10:30 A.M. ON FRIDAY, JULY 11:
Overmountain Cycles owner Michael Lowther announced "chainshaw cucucumber bandit" has been caught and his stolen property has been recovered.
Morganton investigators had located a male in Cherokee with a stolen vehicle, along with the items from the shop.
Some of the items were damaged.
Lowther thanked the community for their support and Morganton Public Safety for their aid in recovering his stolen property.
An investigation is underway for the unusual break-in at Overmountain Cycles, which somehow involved a half-eaten cucumber and a chainsaw. The property loss estimate is $10,000.
Owner Michael Lowther arrived early on Monday, July 7, to find that the electric meter had been removed and internet cables had been cut. The incident was reported around 6:30 a.m.
The perpetrator(s) entered the business from the back, breaking through the wall. The party involved left behind a chainsaw.
“Weird thing is that they left a half-eaten cucumber,” Lowther said. “...They also stole all of our beer. I guess they got thirsty after that job.”
Miscellaneous electronics and computers were stolen, along with tools and one bike. Lowther said that the business has a security system that is battery-operated, but had “fluked.”
“Big thanks to Morganton Public Safety, they are awesome,” Lowther said. “They were really kind and helpful.”
Those who want to support his business, Lowther said, can leave a review or come shop at his store.
