When the ownership of the 1950s-style diner Myra’s in downtown Valdese changed hands again recently, there was a lot of speculation in the community as to who the new owner might be.
Folks now have their answer — owner Wesley Abele of Abele’s Family Restaurant in Morganton will be bringing Myra’s back to life. Coming in just a few weeks: Myra’s Smashburgers and Creamery.
Abele hopes to recreate the success of its Morganton restaurant at Myra’s, returning it to its well-loved status.
“Please be patient for a little while longer as we are doing a full remodel inside. We will have to wait until after opening to remodel the outside, but we are happy to say we’re nearing the end of the interior remodel and starting to get ready to open,” Abele said.
“We still have a lot of work to do, but we think everyone will be pleased. Our expected opening day is early October, and we are working diligently to keep the date.”
The menu will offer the traditional diner favorites with some new burger choices and other new options. For ice cream lovers, the diner will have a new soft-serve machine and hand-scooped Hershey ice cream flavors to pick from.
“As for the atmosphere, we are really leaning on the 50s diner vibe and we hope you love it! There are all new decorations in the dining room and we will still have some of the antiques for all to enjoy. We are installing a brand new display ice cream case so you really feel like you’re in an old ice cream parlor,” Abele said.
Finally, the owners are in full support of the Friday night cruise-ins of older automobiles which have been a community favorite for years.

AT&T STRIKE OVER
Communications Workers of America (CWA) ended its month-long strike Sunday night after reaching a tentative agreement with AT&T. Details of the agreement include improved health care costs and a five-year contract for a wage increase.
According to Scott Bumgarner, technician for AT&T, the initial reason for the strike was the company’s failure to “send anyone to the bargaining table.”
In August, workers cited unfair labor practices, prompting a red-tent strike at AT&T’s Morganton location, 305 S. Green St. A total of 17,000 union workers in the Southeast region participated in the strike.
The tentative agreement was signed Sunday night, but a ratification vote will need to take place for final approval. Bumgarner expects that vote to occur in October.
According to Bumgarner, employees have returned to work.

SECU ELECTIONS UNDERWAY
Members of the N.C. State Employees’ Credit Union (SECU) help determine the direction of the financial institution by voting on its board of directors. Votes can be cast through Tuesday, Oct. 1 online or by mail-in ballot, or in person at the annual meeting on Oct. 8.
Four incumbent directors are running for re-election: McKinley Wooten, Robert Brinson, Mark Flemming, and Stelfanie Williams.
They face a challenge from grassroots candidates Jean Blaine, Susie Ford, Julian Hawes, and Kirby Parrish, long-time members of SECU with ties to leadership.
The challengers are campaigning to restore SECU’s tradition of equal loan rates for all members, opposing recent changes to tier-based lending that they say undermine the credit union’s core values.
For more information or to vote, visit SECU’s website at https://www.ncsecu.org.
