Burke County entrepreneurs eased off the gas in November, but new business creation is still running well ahead of last year.
A review of North Carolina Secretary of State business registration filings shows 49 new entities with Burke County addresses were created in November 2025. That is down from 63 in October, a month-to-month drop of about 22%. Limited liability companies dominated the November list, accounting for 42 of the 49 registrations. The rest included four business corporations, two professional limited liability companies and one nonprofit association. North Carolina requires new LLCs, corporations, nonprofits, and other entities to register with the Secretary of State before operating in the state.
Most of November’s new registrations clustered in and around Morganton. Twenty-nine listed Morganton mailing addresses, while Hildebran had seven and Connelly Springs had six. Valdese and Nebo each posted at least one new registration, and a few filings used Hickory postal addresses tied to the Burke County side of that city.
Service oriented firms continued to drive local growth. Roughly one-fifth of the new companies referenced professional or consulting work, including bookkeeping, insurance services, media production, and general business consulting. Another strong slice involved home improvement and construction. New firms advertised handyman services, contracting, and pavement or sealcoating repair, reflecting steady local demand for small trade businesses.
Food related startups also made a solid showing. New filings included a barbecue operation, a grill, and several small specialty food or catering ventures. Agriculture appeared in a smaller but notable way, with two farm or livestock related companies registering in Hildebran, pointing to ongoing interest in land-based enterprises alongside the county’s more urban service economy.
Health and wellness was another theme. Three newly registered entities referenced counseling or behavioral health in their names. Two of those were professional LLCs, a structure commonly used by licensed practitioners organizing a practice.
Despite the November dip, Burke County’s year-to-date tally points to a busy 2025. Through Nov. 30, the county has logged 593 new business registrations, up about 24% from 477 during the same period in 2024, according to the Secretary of State data. If filings hold through December, Burke is positioned to post one of its strongest years for new entity creation in recent memory.
State filings do not guarantee a storefront or payroll, but they offer an early read on business confidence and intent. The November roster suggests Burke County’s economy remains anchored in small, locally owned service firms, with steady demand for contractors, professional help, health services, and eating places even as overall registration volume cools heading into winter.
