JAMES LYNCH JR. PHOTOS / THE PAPERFollowing a head-to-head loss in last month’s Western Carolina Swimming Association season opener, the Morganton Marlins youth swimming team’s boys have now defeated the always-tough Catawba Valley Aquatic Club in back-to-back meets.
The latest Morganton Swim Club boys victory over Catawba Valley came by a decisive 333-216 margin on Tuesday evening at the Collett Street Recreation Center outdoor pool, leading the Marlins (543) to their first overall win over Catawba Valley (498) this summer despite the Morganton girls finishing a close second place behind their rivals.
Watauga (184) placed third overall as a team, and Rutherford County (65) finished last in the four-team event.
“The swimmers swam well with lots of younger swimmers making big improvements,” Morganton coach Dan St. Louis said. “Everyone is working hard, and it has been a fun summer.”
Individually, Sean Causby (boys 15-and-over 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke) was the lone double winner for the Marlins, and he also teamed with Nicholas Chiota, Jeffrey Gomez-Andres, and Liam Bradshaw in a sweep of the 15O 200 freestyle and 200 medley relays.

Chiota (boys 15O 100 free) and Gomez-Andres (boys 15O 200 IM) were among eight MSC swimmers to win once apiece individually. The others included: Cole Bradshaw (boys 8U 50 free), Yuvan Bajracharya (boys 8U 50 butterfly), Abbott Hoover (boys 8U 50 back), Lumina Miguel (girls 14U 200 individual medley), Nathan Chiota (boys 14U 100 back), and Ana Sic (girls 15O 200 IM).
Also in 15O girls action, Sic, Lucy Lynam, Neyli Lopez-Rodriguez, and Britta Ruechel swept the 200 free and medley relays.
Other winning Marlins relays were: the boys 8U 200 free relay of Bradshaw, Hoover, Dean Olson, and Elijah Rowe and 200 medley relay of Bradshaw, Hoover, Rowe, and Bajracharya; the boys 10U 200 free relay of Tony Throneburg, Brody Hinshaw, Graham Olson, and Jayden Gomez-Andres and 200 medley relay of Throneburg, Olson, Gomez-Andres, and Avery Patton; and the girls 10U 200 free relay of Damaris Lopez-Rodriguez, Claire St. Louis, Tessa Thomas, and Ariel Dubrawsky.
Morganton next hosts a July 14 meet before the season-ending WCSA championship meet on July 25.
