On January 18, detention staff found Teddy Justin Rathbone, 35, unresponsive in his cell at the Burke County Jail when another inmate alerted the officers.

An investigation into the death of a gunshot victim led to authorities arresting a Black Mountain man for murder.

Teddy Justin Rathbone, 33, of Black Mountain was pulled over Wednesday night in a grey Dodge Ram 1500 for a covered registration plate along with blue lights surrounding the plate. Officer Triplett of Morganton Department of Public Safety noticed Rathbone's nervous behavior and pinpoint pupils, leading to an investigation for driving while impaired. Rathbone was subsequently arrested and charged with multiple felonies and misdemeanors, including Felony Trafficking Opium or Heroin and Misd. Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. He was given a 48-hour hold and is scheduled to appear in court on July 25.
