Retired sheriff’s office Lieutenant Timothy Branch may be awarded his gun and badge, depending on how county commissioners vote at their next meeting, which will be tomorrow at 6 p.m.

In his second year as a School Resource Officer (SRO), Officer Brian Cox, a Burke County native with 26 years of law enforcement experience, has been honored as the SRO of the Year for the 2023-2024 school year by the Burke County Sheriff’s Office. Assigned to four schools in the district, Cox goes beyond maintaining safety by building relationships with students, offering guidance, and being a positive influence in their lives. His interactions have been so impactful that students address him as Officer C or Mr. C, seeking his advice and even creating heartwarming moments such as giving him a Father’s Day card. Cox's dedication to student safety and well-being, along with his ability to connect with and mentor young individuals, has led to his recognition as a top SRO in the community.
