Budget decisions have a direct impact on residents and demand transparency. When Valdese chose not to livestream the budget retreat held in April, most residents were left in the dark about financial decisions being debated.
Three contractor firms have made their best pitches in a four-hour meeting on May 22. And now it’s up to the council to decide which proposal best suits the project’s logistical requirements and financial parameters.
The Valdese Town Council recently finalized their budget which includes a 41.5 cent property tax rate decrease, a 5% raise for employees, and essential service retention. The budget for the general fund amounts to $7,643,990 with highlights such as investing in capital projects like clock tower repairs and public safety vehicles. The utility fund, with a budget of $6,819,202, focuses on water and sewer facilities upgrades to serve both inside and outside rate customers. Additionally, the council's reserves fund remains at $6.6 million. The council also approved the construction of a new public safety building, utilizing the former town hall as temporary offices during the two-year process. In other news, Thompson Realty has been selected to handle the listing of seven town-owned properties while the council plans for their upcoming monthly meeting in August.
