Christel Miller, a chemistry teacher at NCSSM-Morganton, experienced a life-shaking event when floodwaters rapidly submerged her home in Burke. Despite lacking flood insurance, Miller and her son managed to escape, only to return to a devastated home. With the unwavering support of her student, Levi Dozier, and the Burke community's selfless efforts, Miller's faith in humanity was restored.

To be honest, the summer leading up to my senior year was the busiest I've ever been. The whirlwind tour began by going down to Louisiana and meeting young changemakers from across the country, coming back and participating in the NCSSM Mentorship program up in Highlands, going to Duke and participating in a Hackbio competition through the NCSSM Summer Leadership and Research program, and ended one week later by moving back on campus.
