Of particular note were the deep-dive series on the Confederate Monument, homeless crisis, and sinkhole in Morganton, each earning commendations. The dedication to producing thorough, balanced, and impactful local journalism is evident in The Paper's multifaceted success. Additionally, individual staff members such as Senior Reporter Marty Queen and Sports Editor Paul Schenkel received recognition for their exceptional work. The upcoming award ceremony in Raleigh on Sept. 19 will rightfully celebrate The Paper's outstanding accomplishments.

Dr. Kevin W. Young will discuss his recently-released book, "The Violent World of Broadus Miller: A Story of Murder, Lynch Mobs, and Judicial Punishment in the Carolinas," at Thornwell Books in Morganton on June 20. Detailing the tragic events following the "legal" lynching of Broadus Miller on July 3, 1927, the book explores the aftermath of Miller's death after being accused of the murder of Gladys Kincaid. Drawing on his educational background in philosophy, English, and history, Young provides a multi-faceted examination of this dark chapter in Morganton's history. Attendees can hear Young speak and get their copies of the book signed at the event.
