Burke County local governments will be eligible to compete for a share of $55 million in new infrastructure funding to help western North Carolina recover from Hurricane Helene and prepare for future storms.
The N.C. Department of Commerce’s Division of Community Revitalization announced the funding through the Renew NC Community Infrastructure Program, a competitive grant program for disaster-affected counties. The money is part of a larger $193 million federal allocation.
Awards are expected to range from $500,000 to $15 million per project. Eligible projects may include property acquisition, demolition, site preparation, flood-control and stormwater systems, public utility upgrades, parks, community centers, roads and bridges.
The first round will give priority to water and sewer projects, parks and recreation facilities, and roads and bridges. Mitigation-only projects will not be funded in this round.
Applications opened July 6 and close at 5 p.m. Sept. 8. Local governments are encouraged to complete free online prescreening through the Renew NC Grant Portal before applying.
