Valdese town leaders discussed the 2026-27 budget proposal that would raise the property tax rate from 41.5 cents to 54.5 cents per $100 valuation through a new fire district tax, while also increasing water and sewer fees.
Ultimately, no changes were made to the proposed budget. Residents will still pay more in taxes and fees if the budget is approved at the May 28 public hearing.
Life in Valdese will be more expensive if the proposed 2026-27 budget passes – Councilwoman Heather Ward suggested deeper budget cuts to avoid raising household expenses.
Mayor Pro Tem Rexanna Lowman, who made the motion to deny the request, said that the planning board unanimously recommended denial after reviewing the details at its March 16 meeting.
