After four-and-a-half years helping steer Burke County’s growth and development, Deputy County Manager and Community Development Director Alan Glines will retire Feb. 27.
During a regular meeting on May 5, Morganton officials unanimously voted to oppose state bills that would impact the City's development plans. Planning and Zoning Director Wendy Smith outlined concerns with House Bill 765 and Senate Bill 451, citing potential risks to housing affordability and public safety. The council also addressed the Hurricane Helene recovery efforts, applying for a grant to fund the Greenway Boardwalk Rehabilitation Project. Additional approvals were given for storm-related expenses and city recognitions.
The City of Morganton's strategic future land use plan, IMAGINE Morganton 2040, is nearing completion following a joint meeting between the City Council and Planning & Zoning Commission. Created with input from over 22,000 residents, the comprehensive plan aims to guide future land use decisions and development in Morganton. Identified strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities inform the six-sectioned plan, including eleven future land use classifications and a policy framework focused on growth, preservation, and community priorities.
