The North Carolina Education Lottery (NCEL) surpassed $1 billion for the third consecutive year — a financial phenomenon with ripple effects in Burke County Pre-Ks, college scholarships, and school development debts.
The eastern Burke County board of education has embarked on a new era for elementary education, voting to purchase land and seek a contractor for a new elementary school in the Hildebran community.Â
The Burke County Board of Education is moving forward with plans to construct a new elementary school in the eastern part of the county. During their annual planning session held on May 5 and 6, board members decided to include a resolution to purchase a 10.06-acre plot in Hildebran for $675,000, adjacent to the current Hildebran Elementary School.Â
The Board of Education members listened as architect Hamilton Cort detailed the $55 million renovation costs for Hildebran and Icard elementary schools during a special meeting. The proposal entails constructing a new elementary school in eastern Burke County, funded by a $42-million grant, with Cort overseeing the study and design. The board approved the purchase of land for the new school, set to open by the 2026-27 academic year. The aging facilities of Hildebran and Icard, built in 1956 and 1934 respectively, require extensive reconfiguration. Additionally, discussions about relocating the central office and other budget revisions were also addressed.
