Burke County Schools is in the process of planning a new elementary school in eastern Burke County, with two public meetings tentatively scheduled for residents of Icard and Hildebran to provide input on the project.

The Board of Education members listened as architect Hamilton Cort detailed the $55 million renovation costs for Hildebran and Icard elementary schools during a special meeting. The proposal entails constructing a new elementary school in eastern Burke County, funded by a $42-million grant, with Cort overseeing the study and design. The board approved the purchase of land for the new school, set to open by the 2026-27 academic year. The aging facilities of Hildebran and Icard, built in 1956 and 1934 respectively, require extensive reconfiguration. Additionally, discussions about relocating the central office and other budget revisions were also addressed.
