Morganton city leaders approved $150,000 to support a new downtown restaurant and advanced final improvements at Bethel Park, including a contract for new ADA-accessible restrooms.
After two years of waiting, Morganton residents can now enjoy Bethel Park again after a major upgrade to provide more amenities and handle larger weather events.
To some passing by, Bethel Park may look overgrown, with tall black-eyed Susans blooming and grasses reaching high — but it’s all part of a science-driven plan to keep the park above water.
Despite delays caused by two storms and excessive silt accumulation, Bethel Park in Morganton is making progress towards its scheduled fall reopening, following extensive restoration and renovation efforts.
The $3.1 million project, initiated before Hurricane Helene, has faced setbacks but remains about 70% complete.
Special Projects Manager Rob Winkler provided updates to the council regarding the removal of over 5,000 cubic yards of silt, additional design and assessment work, and ongoing efforts to restore the park to its pre-storm condition.
Furthermore, plans are in motion to repair the Beanstalk Playground section at Catawba Meadows, with various funding and contracting arrangements being solidified.
