East Burke High School senior Karlie Micol on May 21 signed her
national letter of intent to continue her softball career at Surry
Community College beginning next spring. Pictured alongside Micol

and athletic director Chip Watts. Micol — a pitcher/infielder who
began her prep career at Draughn before playing her final two
seasons with the Lady Cavaliers — as a senior this spring was
limited to five games, in which she tallied three hits including a
double and scored three runs while driving in one. Micol also plays
travel ball with the Dirt Devils Elite organization. Surry is a
member of the NJCAA Division III Region 10, posting an 11-40
overall record in 2026.

The team of Eddie Salyards, Brad Abernathy, Van Nance, Tony
Byerly, and Zach McElvey won the title at the Jeff Carswell
Memorial Pro-Am golf tournament, which was held April 24 at Mimosa
Hills Golf Club. The Blue Ridge HealthCare Foundation’s annual
tournament generated $54,500. “This year’s tournament benefits the
foundation’s General Fund,” said Traci Riebel, the foundation’s
executive director. “This fund helps UNC Health Blue Ridge respond
when needs are greatest, supporting patients, caregivers, and

at a Friday Night Casino Bowling event hosted by Victory Lanes in
Mooresville. Brown is a 2019 Draughn High School graduate who has a
perfect game of 300 on her resume and who bowled collegiately, as
did her younger sister, Cierra Brown.
