Happy Cooking! A twist on Thanksgiving favorites

If you want to add a little pizzazz to your Thanksgiving while still honoring the traditional flavors of the big meal, we have some delicious dishes, courtesy of the Burke Arts Council and Queen’s Catering. BAC regularly hosts cooking classes. Lara Hicks, head chef, makes cooking accessible with her unstuffy style.

Miller speaks to Valdese Rotary

Joel Welch (L),  president of Western Piedmont Community College, introduced guest speaker Lisa Miller (R) to the Rotary Club of Valdese. Miller, who is executive director of the Western Piedmont Foundation, began her program with a slide show depicting poverty levels and child poverty levels, comparing Burke County with other regional counties. In another slide, educational attainments by Burke County residents indicate that nearly 2/3 have not completed or even started studies that will put them in a better income level. The Western Piedmont Foundation is helping to overcome those odds by supporting students and potential students on many levels. Miller then reminded Rotarians about the grand opening of the Regional Skilled Trades Solution Center, which will be on Sept. 19.
