Local first responders and community members came together Tuesday evening on the Historic Burke County Courthouse Square as Morganton Public Safety presented its second annual National Night Out.
The two-hour event included a fire truck show, K-9 and SWAT team demonstrations, a law enforcement officer car show, food, a bounce house, face painting, and more.
National Night Out was established in Philadelphia in 1984 and has since been held annually in communities across the country, and it is an event that Morganton Public Safety Chief Ryan Lander hopes to see grow locally in the years to come.

“Basically, it’s to help boost police-community partnerships, promote neighborhood camaraderie, and kind of heighten crime and drug prevention awareness,” Lander said when discussing the purpose of the event. “So, it’s just us being in a place to be able to facilitate positive interactions with the community that we serve and protect and provide emergency services for.”

Lander noted that attendance increased “from year one to year two,” estimating that “at least a few hundred people were there.” He also explained that National Night Out provides an opportunity for local residents to get to know first responders in a different light.
“It lets people and children realize that we’re kind of just like their dads because we are dads, we’re just like their neighbors because we are neighbors,” Lander said. “We just have different professions.
“The community gets to see the relationships we have with fellow first responders, they get to see it up close and personal. Because all those agencies that were there — whether they’re fire, EMS, or police — we have relationships with, and from time to time they call upon us, or we call upon them and work together.”

Chicken Salad Chick to open on Wednesday, offering giveaways to early guests
Chicken Salad Chick’s new Morganton location will have its grand
opening on Wednesday, offering specials and giveaways to early
guests for the first week of business.

On Wednesday, Morganton will have another new dining option along Burkemont Avenue with the grand opening of Chicken Salad Chick, a casual spot known for its more than a dozen made-from-scratch chicken salad flavors, fresh sides, and more.
The restaurant, at 1016 Burkemont Ave., sits at the former site of the old Village Inn Pizza Parlor and is connected to a Tropical Smoothie Cafe, which has already opened.
Chicken Salad Chick’s new Morganton location is owned and operated by Allison Anderson and Sunny Murtaza, marking the duo’s second restaurant since opening their first location in Hickory in 2024. After discovering the brand in 2021, Anderson was inspired to start her own location.
“From the moment I stepped into the Bristol location, I knew Chicken Salad Chick was something special,” Anderson said. “Opening our second location has been incredibly meaningful to us. It reflects the support we’ve received and the joy we’ve found in serving our communities. Morganton has already shown us so much warmth, and we’re excited to bring our fresh flavors and friendly atmosphere to the local community.”
During the grand opening, guests will be able to take advantage of several different specials and giveaways.
On Wednesday, the first 100 guests will receive free chicken salad for a year and the first guest in line at 10:30 a.m. will receive one free large Quick Chick of chicken salad per week for an entire year. The other 99 guests will receive one free large Quick Chick of chicken salad per month for a year.
The first 50 guests to purchase a meal with two sides on Thursday will receive a free Chick Beanie. The first 50 guests on Friday to purchase a meal with two sides will receive a free 20-ounce Chick Tumbler. Lastly, the first 50 guests to purchase a large Quick Chick on Saturday will receive a free small Teal Cooler.
“Celebrating the grand opening of our Morganton location is an exciting steppingstone as we continue growing in North Carolina,” said Scott Deviney, president and CEO of Chicken Salad Chick. “Allison and Sunny have already built something special with their first restaurant, and bringing a second to the community reflects their passion, dedication, and genuine love for serving others. We’re confident this new restaurant will become a place where neighbors gather, families connect, and guests feel right at home.”
Chicken Salad Chick is open from 10:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
