Liberty Tree Dedication set for May 8 at Freedom Park in Morganton
Burke County residents will have a chance to take part in a local America 250 observance when a Liberty Tree Dedication is held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 8, at Freedom Park, 511 Independence Blvd. in Morganton.
The public event is being promoted as a ceremony to honor liberty, heritage and the enduring spirit of the community.
For local readers, it offers a visible Burke County connection to the broader state and national observance tied to America’s 250th anniversary.
America 250 NC is North Carolina’s official commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 2026. The statewide initiative is led by the N.C. Department of Natural and Cultural Resources and is designed to encourage communities to reflect on the ideas, events and people that shaped both North Carolina and the nation. State materials note that the commemoration began as a multi-year effort in 2024, with events and programs continuing beyond 2026.
North Carolina’s role in the Revolutionary era is a major part of that story. State America 250 materials highlight the Halifax Resolves, adopted in April 1776, as the first official action by an American colony calling for independence from Britain.
The Morganton ceremony is branded as part of America 250 NC Burke County and will take place at Freedom Park, a setting that matches the event’s patriotic theme. Organizers are inviting the public to attend.
The invitation describes the dedication as a community event centered on liberty, heritage and remembrance. The “Liberty Tree” name draws on one of the enduring symbols of the American Revolution, linking the local event to the wider themes being emphasized by the state’s semiquincentennial programming.
