Eligible voters not registered to vote have less than two weeks to act if they want to cast a ballot in the Nov. 3 general election, which will decide races for Congress, the General Assembly, the courts and county and some municipal offices.
The registration deadline is 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 9. Voters who are unsure of their status can check their registration through the Voter Search tool at ncsbe.gov.
Voter registration forms can be picked up at the the offices of The Paper, 110 S. Sterling St., Morganton.
Other options include registering in person at the county board of elections or, for existing N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles customers, through the DMV’s online voter registration service. Applications submitted by mail must be postmarked by Oct. 9.
The registration form requires a voter’s legal name, date of birth, residential address and signature. Applicants also must provide an N.C. driver’s license or DMV identification number, the last four digits of their Social Security number, or indicate that they have neither number. Citizenship documents are not required.
Anyone who misses the Oct. 9 deadline may register and vote at the same time during the early-voting period. Same-day registrants must provide proof of residence showing their current address, such as a driver’s license, government document, utility bill, bank statement or paycheck.
Early voting will run from Thursday, Oct. 15, through 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 31. Voters may cast a ballot at any early-voting location in the county where they are registered.
Burke County’s early-voting locations:
- Burke County Board of Elections, 2128 S. Sterling St., Suite 100, Morganton
- Burke Senior Center, 501 N. Green St., Morganton
- Glen Alpine Town Hall, 103 Pitts St.
- Rutherford College Town Hall, 980 Malcolm Blvd.,
- East Burke Senior Center/Library, 101 Old N.C. 10 W, Hildebran
The Burke County sites will be open from 8 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. weekdays. They also will be open from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on two Saturdays — Oct. 24 and Oct. 31.
Caldwell County’s early-voting locations:
Caldwell County Resource Center, 120 Hospital Ave. NE, Lenoir
William B. Shuford Recreation Center, 56 Pinewood Road, Granite Falls
The Caldwell County sites will be open from 8 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. weekdays and from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 31. They will be closed on other weekends during the early-voting period.
The deadline to request an absentee-by-mail ballot is 5 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 20. Completed absentee ballots must reach the voter’s county board of elections by 7:30 p.m. Election Day.
Election Day polls will be open from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Nov. 3. Voters must use their assigned polling place that day.
Voters will be asked to show an acceptable photo ID during early voting or on Election Day. Those unable to provide one may complete an ID Exception Form.
