American flag-themed art is on display in Morganton City Hall
through the end of July.

The Foothills Painters were invited by the City of Morganton to produce an exhibition in recognition of the 250th anniversary of our nation’s founding.
The artists’ works are wide-ranging in their depictions or interpretations of the American Flag theme. In their explorations of the theme, the artists applied their unique talents, vision, and life experiences, resulting in this multifaceted art exhibition that speaks to a wide audience.
One of the painters, Karin Koval, immigrated from Germany when she was 4 years old.
“I was so amazed when I grew old enough to realize what my native country had done to my adoptive country,” Koval said. “I’m not the only one who has strong feelings about America, and it’s reflected by the different variations of the paintings in this show.”
More than 31 works in a variety of media, including watercolor, acrylic, oil, pastel and mixed media, are represented in the show. The exhibiting artists include Andrew Atkin, Anne Fredley, Susan Grant, Meredith Janssen, Irina Khudyakov, Karin Koval, Martha Monica Lord, Lonny McSherley, Victoria Morales, Donna Robinson, Heidi Schoener, Julie Stephan, Chris Witherspoon, Lee Woodard, and Deb Yandow.
Many of the works are available for sale.
The exhibition opened last month and will remain on display at Morganton City Hall through July, Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The Foothills Painters is a group of regional artists with diverse backgrounds who work in a variety of media and styles. The group was founded in 2001.
Demonstrating their collective artistic strengths, the group has exhibited in many venues, including Arts Culture Catawba, Burke Arts Council, Caldwell Arts, Hickory Museum of Art, and Hiddenite Arts Center. The individual members have shown their work in many other venues as well.

Indivisible Burke NC will host an art show entitled “This Moment” beginning Saturday, July 4, and continuing each of the next four weekends at 123 W. Union St. in Morganton.
“This Moment” will feature art by more than 30 visual artists as well as five musicians and five poets. Their work is inspired by real-world events.
A Pelican’s SnoBalls food truck will be on site during the July 4 opening celebration, which will include a DJ, tie-dying, and face painting from 1-4 p.m. T-shirts will be available for purchase, and attendees are welcome and encouraged to bring their own clothing for tie-dying.
Next weekend’s event is a community art night on Sunday, July 12, from 5-8 p.m., when there will be a community collage project, performances from musicians and poets, and food from the Cactus Rainbow food truck.
On Saturday, July 18, from 6-9 p.m., Asheville-based band Cloud Circuit will perform live music, and a community potluck will be held.
Salsa dance lessons will take place on Saturday, July 25, from 6-9 p.m., with a piñata and Latin food and drinks to be provided.
Finally, the closing reception is set for Sunday, Aug. 2, from 2-5 p.m., when artists will be recognized and People’s Choice Award winners will be announced. Light refreshments will also be provided.
