After debating early vs. traditional calendars during last week’s work session, the Burke County Board of Education decided to go with Plan C.
In a 6-1 vote, the board members approved a third option that could be considered a compromise. Dr. Don Hemstreet was the sole dissenting vote.
The 2023-24 school calendar will address some – but not all – of the concerns expressed by board members over the last few weeks. Students will return to school on Aug. 28, the same date as the traditional calendar. Unlike the traditional calendar, the first semester will be wrapped up before the winter holiday break. At the end of the school year, students will return after Memorial Day. The last day of school for students will be May 31.
