The local Ice Cold squad, coached by Larry Birchfield, won the Queen City Blazin' 7-on-7 high school football tournament on May 6-7, held at the game field and two practice fields at West Cabarrus High School. The team featured two Freedom players, Mikey Cowling and Julian Castro, as well as players from Chase. Ice Cold went 5-0 at the event after finishing an 8-1 regular season across three prior weekends, for a 13-1 overall record. Birchfield said the facility was superb and noted the event featured some top-notch competition fro the greater Charlotte area. Birchfield's local 7-on-7 middle school team, the Black Panthers -- which feature Jaiveon Belin from Table Rock and Julius Dominguez and Jusian Perkins from Walter Johnson -- will be in action in the middle school portion of the event this weekend at Matthews Sportsplex.
