First, congratulations to all of the 2025 high school graduates in Burke County, but especially to the students of Patton High School. Although it has been a challenging year for many of you, I am heartened to see so many of our students graduating this year and celebrate the achievement of such an important milestone in their lives, the first of many I hope will come to pass.
But the truth is, my hope for your success is not enough. Your overall success revolves around you and your choices. High school has certainly prepared you in some ways to keep moving forward, but even your high school education can only do so much. It is an important steppingstone, but you must choose to keep pursuing other steppingstones in building the life you want.
Ultimately, a high school education is just the blueprint and basic framework. You must now fill in the details of the structure of your life and what you want it to be. You are the architects and construction workers of your own life, and you must recognize this and show up to your job every day, working as hard as you can to build the life you want. You will come across people and situations which are unfair. The world will seem unfair, and it often is. But this is not a reason to quit, it is a reason to work even harder, especially in the pursuit of your passions and what you value in life.
So, to the 2025 graduates of Patton High School, as you celebrate this important milestone in your life, I ask that you remember that you oversee building the life you want. Your choices every day define who you are and who you will become. Make the choices that will contribute to the structure of who and what you want to be in a meaningful way. Remember, you are the architects and construction workers of the life you want to build. You may not control all the construction material you have to build with but build you must.
I and the teachers at Patton High School wish you the best in your construction journey.
