East Burke Stadium and Danny Williams Field in Icard was recently up for top high school football stadium in North Carolina in a readers' poll conducted by the Charlotte Observer. The Observer compiled a list of 22 statewide voting options after consulting a group of longtime high school football experts. The poll ran for a week and closed Aug. 4. Fans were allowed to vote as often as they liked. Richmond County's stadium was chosen as the winner, with other finalists including A.C. Reynolds, A.L. Brown, Asheville, Brevard, Charlotte Catholic, Cherokee, Franklin, Grimsley, Kings Mountain, Lincolnton, Mitchell, New Hanover, Providence Day, Randleman, Sanderson, Shelby, South Point, South Rowan, Swain County, and Wake Forest. "People can talk all they want about having the best stadium, but there's nothing that compares to this one," Cavaliers fourth-year coach Derrick Minor said. "It's like a collegiate-level stadium. You've got the bowl, the horseshoe effect. There's no (other) high school stadium that has that. If you find one, let me know. "And I've coached all over the state, I've been all the way east. I coached a game at East Carteret, so we're literally in the beach, and I've been all the way through the mountains. I've yet to find a stadium that looks as good as ours, whether it's the atmosphere, the surround the concrete, everything. It's just a really cool environment stadium-wise."
