On Saturday, Feb. 1, at 12:44 a.m., Officer D. Berrospe observed a grey Honda Accord driving at 15 mph in a posted 45-mph zone and fail to maintain the lane of travel.
PSO Berrospe conducted a vehicle stop , signaling for the car to pull over. The driver did not stop, but instead accelerated away; Berrospe followed. The driver of the Honda, identified as Remigio De Leon, 26, of Morganton, reached speeds in excess of 92 mph. The chase continued for approximately 2.1 miles, ending on Highway 70. De Leon stopped his vehicle and pulled to the right.
De Leon and a passenger were detained and after further investigation, De Leon was arrested and the passenger was provided with transportation to his residence. De Leon was charged with the following:
Felony Flee Elude Arrest
Driving While Impaired
Reckless Driving to Endanger
No Operator License
Speeding 92 mph in a 45 mph Zone
Open Container of Alcohol
Failure to Heed Lights and Siren
Drive Left of Center
The vehicle being driven was seized and De Leon was brought before the magistrate and given no bond due to being on pre-trial release for a DWI charge in October of 2024. De Leon has a court date set for May 5. The Burke County Sheriff’s Office and Drexel Police Department were assisting agencies.
