Saydie Bean, who had served as a summer intern at The Paper from May through August, is joining the news staff full time as a general assignment reporter focusing on law enforcement news.
A resident of Valdese, Bean is a graduate of Freedom High School and has completed all of her coursework for a bachelor of arts degree in communications from Western Carolina University in Cullowhee. She will receive her diploma at the December graduation ceremony.
While attending WCU, Bean served as editor-in-chief of the Western Carolina Journalist and also worked with the Western Carolinian, the Sylva Herald, and the Smoky Mountain News.
“Saydie is a young woman of tremendous talent and potential,” said Editor Bill Poteat. “The veterans on our staff are looking forward to helping her grow, mature, and hone her craft, laying the groundwork for a long and fruitful career as a journalist.”
